The Butterfly Lady Presents... The Monarch Show
Now booking presentations for classrooms, your local organization, or simply
for a group of butterfly enthusiasts- I have prepared a delightful & fun -fact filled hour (or so) all about the Monarch Butterfly. This
presentation begins with the butterfly lifecycle, from egg to adult
butterfly I have beautifuly detailed pictures to illustrate the miraculous
transformation as well as a power point series of emergence pictures from
previous flocks I have worked with, accompanied by colorful narration.
As we approach the habits of the fully emerged adult butterfly, I will
describe the amazing and completely unique migratory habits of the Monarch,
including their favorite flight paths, (did you know we are in a commonly
used migratory route right here in the Verde Valley?) as well as tips to
lure them into your own garden at home.
What? You don't have a butterfly landing zone? We can fix that, too. Each
person attending the Monarch presentation will recieve a packet of milkweed
seeds to plant at home or gift to a gardening friend. (2 varieties to choose
from- I can help you decide which variety will best suit your
garden/windowsill) Planting instructions will be included, (although barely
necessary- scatter into rich well drained soil, add water & stand back -
they grow like weeds!) and soon enough you will be able to entice egg-laden
female monarchs to your garden & enjoy watching & helping to support the
entire lifecycle right in your own backyard.
It came to my attention that the Monarchs have become so rare that many
people have never even seen one, or may have but were unable to identify it.
To help fellow butterfly lovers know EXACTLY what the monarchs look like, I
have had life-sized actual-color photographs of one of the first females to
emerge from the first flock released here in AZ printed as a sticker. Kids &
grown ups alike LOVE sticking butterflies anywhere & everywhere, and the
best part about my monarch stickers is that each and every time you glance
at it, you are learning the size, color, wing markings, and all the little
details that will help you identify the real thing when it flies into your
garden for a visit. Everyone gets a monarch sticker, too!
The Monarch Butterfly is very close to being added to the Endangered Species
List, if their population continues to decline as it has been for over a
decade now. One of their biggest challenges is finding enough milkweed for
the caterpillars to eat. It is the only food source they can live on.
Without Milkweed there will be no Monarchs. I hope you will join me in my
quest to provide safe, pesticide-free landing zones throughout their paths
so our winged friends can have safe resting harbors throughout their
journey.
